India in Paralympic


Sports are an activity which provides a person freedom from stress, depression and other mental illness. Sports bring people closer to each other , sports teaches how to forget about the faults   and flaws , it teaches a person to built up  a team as a whole. There are several sporting events which are purposely designed for the physically challenged players, this sports event are mostly organized during the Paralympics matches. Paralympic is a tournament specially designed and conceptualized for the physically challenged players. The first paralymic game was organized in the year 1948 for the English World War II veteran.
In Paralympic there are several categories in which the athletes compete. The allowable disabilities are broken down into ten eligible impairment types. The categories are impaired muscle power, impaired passive range of movement, limb deficiency, leg length difference,  hypertonia, ataxia, athetosis , vision impairment, short   stature and intellectual impairment.[3] These categories are further broken down into classifications, which vary from sport to sport. The classification system has led to cheating controversies revolving around athletes who over-stated their disabilities, in addition to the use of performance-enhancing drugs
India is also a participant of Paralymics , first exposure of Indian physically challenged athlete was received in the year 1968 and again in 1972 and again in 1984. In 1972 the Heidelberg Games ,  Murlikant Petkar swam the 50 meter freestyle in a world record time of 37.331 seconds to give India her first ever Gold. In 1984, Joginder Singh Bedi won silver at the Men's Shot Put and followed it up with a pair of bronze winning performances in the Discus and Javelin throws. Another Indian, Bhimrao Kesarkar, won the silver medal in the Javelin.The 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens when Devendra Jhajharia,[3] Javelin thrower, won gold and Rajinder Singh won bronze for powerlifting in the 56-kg category.  H. N. Girisha, an Indian athlete born with a disability in the left leg, won the silver medal in the 2012 Paralympic games held in London in the men's high jump F-42 category.

In the recent Paralympics which took place in Rio Di Janeiro in 2016 Indian Para-athletes have showed their talents and earned 4 medals, 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze. Mariyappan Thangavelu earned a gold medal in Men's High Jump F42, Devendra Jhajharia won a gold medal in Men's Javelin F46 and the silver  medal is earned by76 Deepa Malik  in Women's Shot Put F53and a bronze medal is brought by Varun Bhati in Men's High Jump F42.
